Tucker Family
First GenerationIn the previous version of this page I expressed my uncertainty about the parents of Matthew Tucker. I now think that he was the brother of Drury Tucker (1719-1801), whose parents were very likely John Tucker (d. ca. 1727) and wife Catherine, and that John in turn was probably the son of Francis Tucker (ca. 1653-1723) and wife Mary of Prince George Co. VA. Matthew and Drury appear together in many transactions in Albemarle Co. VA; Matthew named a son Drury, Drury named a son Matthew, and their families share other names in common as well.Matthew married Lucretia Childers in January 1748/1749 in Albemarle Co. VA. She was the daughter of Abraham Childers and Elizabeth Cannon. In 1787 Matthew married Esther Stamps (or Stumpf?), a widow, who survived him. Matthew seems to have remained in Albemarle County, in the part which became Amherst Co., through the Revolution, but eventually moved to Campbell County, home of his daughter Mary Ann Tucker Irvine, where he died in 1796.
Second GenerationChildren of Matthew and Lucretia Tucker, birth order unknown*Josiah Tucker Joseph Tucker John Tucker m. Rhoda Powell, 1778 Isaiah Tucker Jesse Tucker (ca. 1764-1817) m. Nancy Layne in 1791. Drury Tucker Sarah Tucker m. Charles Ellis in 1770 Mary Ann Tucker (?-1817) m. John Irvine in 1772 Whitefield Tucker Lucretia Edee Tucker m. 1) John Maxey, 2) ?? Hundley Scena Tucker Betsy Ann Tucker m. Garland Hurt Louisa Tucker m. Christopher Irvine in 1778 Matthew's will, written in 1790 and probated in 1796, names all the children except Drury and Louisa. Louisa is identified as his daughter from her marriage bond, and Drury as his son from a reference to him and Isaiah as brothers in Jesse's widow's pension application. *I'm not sure Josiah really exists. I have no other information on him, and I wonder if he could be the same as either Joseph or Isaiah.
