Allen Ellis appears in the Chatham Co. census in 1850, age 70, with wife Thena age 60, and two children, Lucinda and Sugar (?), still living at home. Son Allen Ellis age 27 is nearby, with his wife Nancy Mariah Herndon.

Update, April 15, 2009: Previously I stated that Sugar was a daughter. On looking at the census again, I see that this person is male, listed as a labourer, and that it's not at all clear that the name is in fact Sugar.

I don't have a full reconstruction of Allen and Theney's family yet. I begin here with Allen Jr. and Nancy.

MONCURE - Mrs. Julia G. Ellis, 96, widow of Alexander Ellis of Rt. 1, Moncure, died Wednesday. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday, New Elam Christian Church, the Revs. Emerson Woodall, Jim Redding and Gene Tally. Burial, church cemetery. Surviving: four daughters, Mrs. E.R. Cotten of Fuquay-Varina, Mrs. L.W. Cotten of Sanford, Mrs. W.E. Peele and Mrs. G.L. Mansfield of Moncure; four sons, H.A. of Sanford, A.J. of Concord J.C. of Lumberton and C.N. Ellis of Pleasant Gardens; a half-brother, Macon Goodwin of Moncure; three half-sisters, Mrs. Cecil Morris of New Hill, Mrs. Wesley Fidler of Raleigh and Mrs. Paul Jones of West Palm Beach, Fla; 39 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren.
