Rutland family of Orangeburg Co. SC

First Generation

Edwin D. Rutland was born about 1802, and died August 15, 1875. His wife Martha M. Judy died only a few weeks later, on September 8. The family appears in the Orangeburg SC census in 1850-1870. It's been suggested to me that Edwin was the son of Cullen Rutland of North Carolina.

Second Generation

Children of Edwin Rutland and Martha Judy
John H. Rutland (ca. 1840-?)
William W. Rutland (1842-1928)
Elizabeth Rutland (ca. 1843-?)
Alexander Rutland (1845-1925) m. Margaret Ann Binnicker (1849-1928)
Henry A. Rutland (1847-1928) m. Jane Pearson (d. 1930)

William, Alexander and Henry all served in the Confederate Army.

Third Generation

Children of Alexander Rutland and Margaret Ann Binnicker
Charles H. Rutland (1868-1944) m. Mary Ann Bolen
Marion A. Rutland (1870-1897)
Andrew L. Rutland (1873-1938) m. Julia Mae Davis
Martha Idella Rutland (1875-1961) m. Charles Clifford Fralick (1871-1936)
Mary Estelle Rutland (1879-1957) m. Jesse H. Houck (1873-1940)
Oscar Rutland [probably John Oscar Rutland, b. 14 Nov 1882]
Judson Rutland [probably Ransom Judson Rutland, b. 8 Aug 1886]
Novy Rutland (1885-1893)
Holland Rutland (1892-1893)

I was told that Alexander and Margaret were also the parents of Julius M. Rutland (1880-1963) who m. Carrie O'Neal (1889-1980). However, an 18-year-old named Julius appears in the 1900 census as the son of H.A. and Jane Rutland, living in the household adjacent to Alexander and Margaret.

In further support of Julius not being Alexander and Margaret's son, in 1900 and also in 1910, Margaret is listed as the mother of 9, 6 of whom are living. Since Marion, Novy and Holland all died young, per cemetery records, this is consistent with the list above, without Julius.
